| Lost Child Procedure |
In the unlikely event that a child gets lost. The person in charge puts the following procedure into place: -
FOR THE PARAMOUNT SAFETEY OF ALL CHILDREN, IT IS IMPORTANT TO REMAIN CALM AT ALL TIMES.
● The Person in charge will make sure that everyone remains calm for a moment so that she may cast her eye around the immediate surroundings to look for the child. She will call out the child’s name in case they may be hiding or obscured.
● The principle will delegate the deputy to take over charge of the children. Take them to a safe place for example, a closed play area or café. If the children are likely to be delayed in their return, a person is delegated to pre-warn all the parents/carers. It may be necessary to ask them to come and collect their children.
● Agree a meeting point and use the school mobile phone to communicate. The person in charge should remain at this point.
● Ask bystanders if they have seen the child, giving a brief description. (At this stage it is unlikely that more people will be looking).
● Delegate people to follow the track back to the starting/finishing point to see if the child has wandered back.
● Check areas where the group may have stopped and areas intriguing to small children e.g. playgrounds, the location of animals, ice cream shops etc.
● Delegate a person to go to the park attendant/café/shop/museum information desk to see if the child has already been found and taken to safety.
● Give a description and name of the child
● If the child is still missing telephone 999 to get help from the police.
● If the parent is not present, telephone them and remain calm.
● Try to keep it brief whilst giving accurate information.
● Fill out the missing child’s report – this will be important for the police. The report will give the child’s personal details. Including what they were wearing, where they were last seen and when the child went missing. |
